The Monica -
by Chris Lawrence

In January 1966, Christopher J. Lawrence & Co. were contracted by La Compagnie Francaise de Produits Metalargique (CFPM) to design and develop a close-coupled high performance four door sports car mainly for the French market; hence the 'small' capacity 2.6 litre four-cylinder engine originally envisaged. Called the 'Monica', the car eventually debuted with a Ted Martin-designed V8 engine and S525 ZF 5-speed gearbox at the Paris Motor Show of 1974. This is the story of the car and what happened to the small numbers that made it into production, told by the man who project-managed it from studios and workshops in London.

The first Mille Miglia (over 1071 miles) was won by Minoja/Morandi in a little more than 21 hours - the last (998 miles) in 10 hours seven minutes by Stirling Moss/Denis Jenkinson in the famous Mercedes-Benz SLR.

Neville Hay tells of the memorable moments in the life of Aston Martin's most famous racing car, the 3-litre, straight-six DBR1 that eventually won the Le Mans 24 Hours (and sports car World Championship) in 1959. The car will form the centrepiece of Aston Martin celebrations at the forthcoming Silverstone Classic from 28 - 30 July 2006.
