Racing Reminiscences - The Editor interviews Robs Lamplough
In the space of 12 months, Robs went from racing a Mini Cooper at Brands Hatch Boxing Day to competing with the top drivers in the Canadian Grand Prix and other major meetings across the Atlantic.
Believed to be one of the youngest persons ever to have flown in a combat aircraft during WWII - his father's Bristol Beaufighter in May 1945 - Robs nevertheless turned his back on a flying career with the RAF, finding himself at the Royal Miltary Acedemy Sandhurst in 1960, having been transferred from Cranwell. A chance meeting with fellow officer Mark Konig meant a trip to Goodwood for the 1961 TT being Robs' first motor race as a spectator - his second was as a competitor!
In 1962 he purchased a Mini Cooper, this then led to a Lotus 23 sports car, an Elva 1000cc Formula Junior, and finally an ex-Targa Florio Brabham BT8 in which he entered the Canadian Grand Prix, then a 200-mile race for two-seaters, finishing 15th overall after some mechanical troubles.
Forgotten makes - Keith Douglas - The author discusses some of motoring's lesser-known makes and models, such as the Hillman Isis and Wizard, and the Hudsons built in the UK at CA Vandervell's property in Acton, West London.
Rudolf Carracciola Neville Hay examines the career of one of the True Greats, the German-born but Swiss-domiciled Grand Prix and sports car driver of the '30s, '40s and '50s. Carracciola, despite several severe accidents, survives the Pre-War 'Silver Arrows' period, and takes up motor-racing again for Mercedes (who else?) in 1952 at the wheel of a 300SL, finishing in a fine fourth place on that year's Mille Miglia.
Eoin Young's Diary - More reminiscences from 'down under' where veteran journalist (and friend to Bruce McLaren, Timmy Mayer, Denis Hulme, Chris Amon et al) discusses, amongst other matters, the natural ability of bespectacled Kansan driver Masten Gregory, and Jimmy Clark's last Tasman Series in 1968 at the wheel of a Gold Leaf Lotus 49 with special 2.5 litre motor.
