Eric Thompson - Often described as the most professional amateur, life as a Lloyds broker left Eric Thompson with less time to race than he would have liked. Nevertheless he still managed to make his mark as a member of the works Aston Martin sports car team of the 1950s, enjoying some excellent results such as 3rd at Le Mans in 1951, 2nd at the Dundrod TT in 1953 and winning the BARC Goodwood Nine Hours in the same year.
This first part of the Editor's interview describes early motoring experiences on four wheels and two, as well as life in the Army during the war. An experience that included being billeted in Villa Porsche, on the Worthersee near Klagenfurt, that had been Doctor Ferdinand Porsche's holiday home.
48th Rallye International des Alpes, July 2004 - Chris Jolly enters the rally from Geneva to St Moritz in PUM 6, the Aston Martin DB2 that had won the event in 1954. Now a well-known Aston Martin Owners Club race car, the DB2 started life as a privately-owned, works-prepared rally car.
Four cars from Surrey to Cornwall with one returning - On his retirement in 1984, John Herring and his wife Heather had decided to move from Leatherhead, in Surrey, to Cornwall. His simple task is to move his classic car collection (Alfa Romeo GTV 2000, Aston Martin DB2 Mk III and Lotus Elan 2+2 130S) with the aid of a recalcitrant Austin Maxi tow-car and hired 4-wheel car trailer. Seized engines, flat tyres, flat batteries and empty petrol tanks charecterise an eventful trip.
Edgar Kehoe obituary - As the oldest member of the British Racing Drivers Club, the oldest surviving Old Etonian, and probably one of the oldest drivers on the road, Edgar Kehoe's death aged 100 in July 2004 is worthy of mention. His long racing history includes drives at Brooklands, Goodwood and Donington. He was also an enthusiastic supporter of polo in the UK, attending Cowdray Park on a regular basis.
