The Mighty Merlin - Buying a Rolls-Royce Phantom II chassis and Merlin V12 aero-engine as a 'project' in 1987, highly-experienced collector and dealer Nick harley describes how he was able to complete the car as a 'special', one that was originally envisaged to be a tow car capable of pulling the original owner's Lister Jaguar and trailer - with a hypothetical top speed of 180 mph!
The car was painstakingly finished, with a body in the style of Gurney Nutting, and eventually sold to an American collector who could accept the 2 miles per gallon fuel consumption.
Eric Thompson's Racing Reminiscences - After army service in WW2, Thompson is now a regular racing driver in post-war Europe. In 1949 motor racing returned to Le Mans and Thompson shared a 1,500cc HRG with Jack Fairman, finishing in an excellent class-winning 8th place. As part of an HRG team, Thompson enters the car in the ensuing Spa 24 Hours and wins the class again. More successes in the UK meant a winning run of 7 races on the trot. Thompson decides "It was time to pack it in and devote my attention to earning a living". This was not to last very long as further installments will show.
Neville Hay's Summer Season Part III - This month it's time to review the 2004 Goodwood Revival in detail, and Hay describes each individual race, including the meeting's highlight, The RAC TT Celebration, which this year featured another win for the Attwood/Hales Bizzarrini.
Driving to Hounds - The VSCC's SeeRed race meeting at Donington this year also featured a team event that Robert Heelis entered his son Toby in the family Delage D7-75 as part of an all-Delage equippe. Calling themselves 'The Hounds', they came home 6th out of 16, a definite third place denied them due to serious brake problems in the last half hour.
